The history of BVLGARI watches
The well-known luxury brand began in Greece in 1884 by a silversmith named Sotirios Voulgaris. In 1881 he moved to Rome and opened his first shop in 1884. In 1905 he opened another shop on the Via Condotti. Known initially for beautiful silver with sparkling gems, when Sotirios died in 1932 his two sons took on the businesses and in the 1940s produced the Serpenti bracelet-watches.
During WWII, designs were simplified, but post-war the designs became more intricate, with diamonds, gems and precious metals being used. These designs were much loved by the stars of the day, including Elizabeth Taylor and Ingrid Bergman. Cabochon cuts became more popular in designs as did gems chosen for their colour as opposed to their intrinsic value.
In the 1970s the brand grew internationally with stores opening in New York, Monte Carlo and Paris.
In the early 1980s, BVLGARI Time was founded in Switzerland. In 2000 BVLGARI bought watchmaking brands Daniel Roth and Gérald Genta.
There are various collections within the BVLGARI range. Serpenti, with its snake-like designs Lvcea inspired by ‘luce’ light. Divas’ Dream a collection of beautiful colourful watches.
