The history of Earnshaw watches
Thomas Earnshaw was born in 1749 in Ashton-under-Lyne in Manchester. He was known for improving the marine chronometers of the time. He developed the Chronometer no. 506 which was carried by the HMS Beagle with Charles Darwin. Earnshaw grew clocks for Greenwich Observatory, and many of his productions are available to see in museums. The Beagle is a watch still produced today.
The HMS Investigator, carried two boxed Timekeepers by Earnshaw E520 and E543, as Captain Flinders circumnavigated and mapped the coastline of Australia.
After his retirement, he handed the business over to his son.
London County Council erected a blue plaque at 119 High Holborn, Camden, WC1, the place of Earnsha’s workshop to commemorate all that Earnshaw did.
The collection includes the Invincible with a silicon strap, the vintage-looking Longcase 43 with leather or stainless steel straps, the Officer with the day/date and sun/moon. The ladies Investigator is named in honour of the ship captained by Flanders, the Lapidary is more like a piece of jewellery, each watch being unique and the Longitude Meteorite with genuine Muonionalusta meteorite hand-carved in Switzerland.
